Kakadu National Park Australia Road Trip (Oct)

Family of 6, (2 Adults, 10,10,9,5)

BRING Passports, Need e-visas  APPLY HERE  $20AUD, shorts and t-shirts, insect repellant, water thermos, cooler, water bottles, fly nets, transportable food

TRANSPORTATION: AVIS:  7 person, Full Size 4 Wheel Drive

Need:  Kakadu National Park Pass, $100 Family Pass

Day 0:

Day 1:  

pick up rental car

Get groceries and cooler set up from Woolworths or Coles, lots of water

Drive: Window on the Wetlands, giant termite mounds, Mamukala Wetlands

Arrive Bowali Visitors Center (open 8-5pm)

Check in to Anbinik KAKADU – 2 bedroom lodge, bathroom private steps away (desk closes at 5pm)

Lunch:  Groceries

Culture Cruise-EAST ALLIGATOR River TOUR ($348) (Book at the Border Store)

5pm Hike Ubirr: Ubirr Rock:   Art Rock motifs in a natural art gallery that stretches more than 40 feet…viewed on the way up to a panoramic lookout..  It was spectacular in the late afternoon.

6pm Sunset: Nardab Lookout

7pm Dine: Border Store, Thai food (open until 8pm)

Day 2:

7-8:30 am Sunrise Birding Walk at Jaibru Lake Bird

Hike Bardedjilidji walk

Head back to Anbinik

Lunch: Groceries

Relax

Dinner: Aurora Lodge for food and swim, great place, maybe even better place to stay.

Day 3:

Breakfast/Check Out

8:30 Drive to Nourlangie  

9:00-11:30AM Nourlangie Rock Art Site for guided Rock Art Talks- fantastic!

Lunch: Groceries

12:30PM Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Center at Cooinda (8-5pm)✅

Drive to Cooinda, Cooinda Lodge Kakadu – 1 Night  Via Kakadu Highway, Jim Jim, Cooindah, 0886 Cooinda (Phone: +61889791500)

Pool Time

4:30PM Yellow Water Sunset Cruise

Dinner: 7PM Hotel Restaurant, local animal sample platter

Day 4:  

9:30AM hotel breakfast and check out.

Drive

Hike 1km stairs up to Gunlom Waterfall, creek at bottom

Lunch: Groceries

Drive and Arrive in Katherine (3 hrs)

5:30PM Edith Falls 1km Hike and swim

Dinner:  Savannah Cafe at hotel

Day 5:

9am The Finch Cafe (Hours 8am-2pm) (hipster health food)

Katherine Gorge Helicopter Ride

Emerald Spring Roadhouse

Drive to Litchfield 3 hours

Litchfield:  Watering holes

Wangi Falls and Buley Rockhole pools

Day 6:

Hotel Breakfast Curve

Lagoon Wave Pool ($18 per family)

Mindil Beach Market (Thursday and Sundays only):  Food, Craft, Shows, SUNSET

Day 7:

Crocosaurus Cove (can prebook to swim in the cage with a crocodile)

Lunch at Tap’s… Not great

4:30-5:30PM Big Buoy Water Park

Chow’s for Dinner (again!)

FLIGHT

Grocery needs:

Water bottles, bread, lunch meats, hummus, guacamole, peanut butter and jelly, chips, bars

Jabiru:  

There’s a grocery store open 7 days a week 9-5:30, except Sundays closes at 1:30

BP gas station closes at 8:30pm each night

3 restaurants:  Thai at Border Store, Aurora Lodge, or the Croc shaped hotel.  

Bring meat for Barbie from Darwin or plan to make grocery store before it closes daily.

*Berry Springs – Found out later they do a 9:40 AM Wallaby Encounter, should have landed and gone straight there.  

Jim Jim Falls – Closed for the season due to early rains, this one was devastating to miss

Maguk Falls – Closed for the season due to early rains

*Dinner:  7-9:30 PM Marksie’s Stockman’s Camp Tucker Night (Katherine) Under the Stars with Wallabys and camp stories

Cutta Cutta Caves

Anbangbang Billabong walk/Nawurlandja Lookout walk (1 ½ hours)
