San Francisco Trip Advice from a Local

by Jen Ruch

San Francisco is an amazing city and one I called home for 5 years, 2 of those with a baby. It is easy to get around if you do your research. There are so many amazing Asian restaurants to try in the city and an endless amount of activities to enjoy with children.

Where to Stay:

Since I lived in San Francisco, I never really had to stay in a hotel. However, I will say that I love the location of the Laurel Inn. The setting is beautiful and away from touristy locations.

What to Eat:

San Francisco has the best Asian restaurants. My favorites are My Tofu House on Geary, Cafe Bunn Mi in the Inner Richmond, Saiwaii Ramen in the Outer Sunset, Burma Superstar on Mandalay and Kevin’s Noodles for cheap pho in the Inner Sunset. For bakeries, I recommend Arizmendi in the Inner Sunset or B. Patisserie. Sushi is great in most places in San Francisco and I love Sushirito for lunch. Most restaurants in San Francisco are very kid friendly.

Favorite Activities:

Indoor – California Academy of Sciences and the Exploratorium.

Outdoor – Walk on Crissy Field (stop at Sports Basement which is a fun store with great deals). Lands End Trail and Baker Beach are also great. The Moraga Steps are fun to hike up. You can bike through Golden Gate Park and stop to see the buffalo. The Presidio has numerous trails to run or hike. Off the Grid has several food truck events that are fun for kids.

Outside of SF – We like visiting the Bay Area Discovery Museum and hiking at Point Reyes and throughout Marin. If you go to Sausalito, Fred’s is a good spot for breakfast or lunch. You can also take the ferry to Angel Island for the hike and views.

Transportation:

The bus is a safe and easy option. Get a clipper card at Walgreens and load it with money. Download the Routesy App for the latest timetables. Uber is prolific and you will never have a problem getting a ride. If you rent a car, be very mindful of the street signs. They will ticket or tow on the nose when the time runs out or for street cleaning. Also, curb your wheels on hills because that is an automatic ticket and don’t leave any valuables, including suitcases, in your car because there is a chance of your windows being broken (speaking from experience).

My biggest piece of advice for families visiting San Francisco is to get out of the Union Square area and see the rest of the city! Every neighborhood is so unique and each one has something different to offer.
