If you’re lucky enough to visit New York City during great weather, we have the perfect list of outdoor activities for you to take advantage of. From a nostalgic visit to Coney Island to the hub of all tourist activities, Times Square, we covered it all. Kids and parents alike will have a great time with these ten New York City outdoor activities.

Brooklyn Bridge

Our group contributors highly recommend walking across the Brooklyn Bridge with your family. You will have to plan out whether you want to walk to Brooklyn or walk into Manhattan (or both!) The walk is just over a mile long and you take the kids straight to Brooklyn Bridge Park, overlooking Manhattan. Don’t miss Slide Mountain or Jane’s Carousel while you’re there.

Central Park

No trip to NYC is complete without a stroll through Central Park. There are hundreds of things to do within the park – go boating or bike riding, sledding or ice skating in the winter, plan a picnic, or visit a playground. If you have more time, visit the Central Park Zoo or the Victorian Gardens Amusement Park.

Statue of Liberty

When visiting the Statue, you can choose a Grounds Only, Pedestal, or Crown ticket. The Crown ticket may require reservations up to six months in advance, so plan accordingly. This is definitely an experience the entire family will enjoy and love sharing with friends when they get back home.

Bronx Zoo

If you have extra time and can squeeze in a day to get out of NYC, your family is sure to enjoy the Bronx Zoo. It is one of the largest zoos in the US with over 6,000 animals. Inside the zoo, you can also enjoy the Dinosaur Safari, Wild Asia Monorail, Butterfly Garden, Treetop Adventure and so much more.

Coney Island

Located in Brooklyn, Coney Island is known as the birthplace of the amusement park. Visit for a nostalgic day of carnival games and rides that are sure to thoroughly entertain your children. You can take a break from the rides to enjoy the beach and the many shops and restaurants in the area. This is the perfect summer day trip!

Times Square

Locals stay far away from Times Square, but if you haven’t experienced it yet, it’s a must-see, especially at night! You will be surrounded by flashing lights and billboards in every direction. You can walk through iconic restaurants and shops and also take advantage of the TKTS booth if you have time. It’s also a great spot to grab a bite to eat outdoors and people watch!

Empire State Building

Located in the center of Manhattan, the observatory deck at the Empire State Building provides 360-degree views of NYC. It’s also in the heart of the city making it easy to walk to many other places like Times Square, Madison Square Park, and the Theater District. This is definitely something you have to do at least once in your life!

The High Line

The High Line is a public park in NYC built on a historic elevated freight rail line. Instead of being demolished, it was transformed into a beautiful outdoor space combining nature and art. Grab a bite and take a stroll for a different perspective of New York.

Vessel in Hudson Yards

Even if you haven’t heard of the Vessel yet, we’re sure you’ve seen pictures of it. The soaring and interactive spiral staircase is meant to be climbed. Comprised of nearly 2,500 steps, it offers unique angles and views of the city and beyond. Hudson Yards is also a great location for shopping and dining in NYC.

Governor’s Island

This unexpected 172 acre island is easily accessible by ferry from Brooklyn, making it a great option after walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. Enjoy an amazing park, zip lining, rock-climbing wall and a mini golf course. Glamping is also a major attraction of the island. Check online for current events and happenings on Governor’s Island during the time of your trip.
