There are two groups of opinions from our contributors when it comes to whether you should plan a trip to NYC during Christmas – one is that it will be amazing and magical, and the other is that it will be crowded and cold. But if you have your heart set on visiting during December school break, we rounded up the best New York City Christmas activities with kids.
The Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden
This popular show is an institution during the holidays in New York. More than 175 New York landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center, the Yankee Stadium and more are recreated using natural elements like bark, acorns and leaves. The show is indoors so you don’t have to worry about the weather outside.
Visit a Museum
New York City museums are always a great place to visit, but some are extra special during the holidays. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a beautifully lit Christmas tree you can visit. The Natural History Museum presents a very special Origami Holiday Tree.
Bryant Park
The Bryant Park Winter Village cannot be missed during the Christmas holidays. The popular ice-skating rink will be open, with free admission, along with over 150 shopping stalls and food vendors. The park also holds a beautiful tree-lighting ceremony and has many events scheduled throughout the holiday season.
Rockefeller Tree
If there is a Christmas centerpiece in New York City, it is the tree at Rockefeller Center. You have to make the time to get a picture with this beautifully lit tree, but expect lots of crowds, especially at night.
Radio City Rockettes
Take a break from the cold and go inside to watch an entertaining performance by the Rockettes. They are widely known in New York City and around the world as the leading precision dance company. You’re sure to have a true holiday experience during their Christmas Spectacular performance.
Window Displays
Walking around New York City to check out the holiday window displays is a beautiful (and free!) activity. The best place to do this is along Fifth Avenue where you will find displays at stores like Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue. Stop by before or after a visit to Rockefeller Center.
Columbus Circle
The Columbus Circle Christmas Market is one of the best in New York City and provides a great opportunity to do some Christmas shopping. You can also enjoy the beautiful decor and delicious food stalls while you’re there.
Bronx Zoo
If you have time for the Bronx Zoo during your trip, you can’t miss the Holiday Lights nights. LED lighted animal sculptures light your way throughout the park. You can also board a holiday train, enjoy roaming carolers and watch ice carving. Plus, hot cocoa and marshmallows!
If you can make it to New York City during the holidays, you will be surrounded by lights and holiday decor. Prepare yourself in advance to deal with lots of tourists and you’ll be fine.
